Red Dot Books
In the Sentinel community, we prioritize literacy and reading independently. "Red Dot" books refer to the outside reading book a student reads each semester to further the goal of developing reading fluency as well as enjoyment.
We know that practicing reading develops fluency, comprehension, focus, and intellectual fitness.
Additionally, According to Dr. Maryann Wolf,* “deep reading” is in danger of being replaced by shallow reading. Deep reading is when the reader gives their full attention to a book, usually a work of fiction. In contrast, shallow reading is when a reader skims information, often on a screen, often while multitasking.
Wolf cites multiple studies showing that deep reading activates several vital parts of the reader’s brain, including those that support
